This is an archive website for North Essex Garden Communities Ltd.
North Essex Garden Communities Ltd was set up in 2017 to develop proposals for three new garden communities across North Essex, taking forward the Garden City idea for the 21st Century.
NEGC Ltd was owned by Braintree District Council, Colchester City Council, Tendring District Council, and Essex County Council with each having one place on the company board. The Chairman of the board was Essex County Council representative John Spence CBE. In September 2017 the board appointed Richard Bayley as Managing Director of NEGC Ltd.
Recognising the opportunity to provide housing in a new and different way (while also supporting the wider economic growth of the area) Braintree, Colchester and Tendring Councils along with Essex County Council joined together to put forward plans for three new settlements built to Garden City Principles.
The three proposed sites were based at West of Braintree, on the Braintree/ Colchester border and on the Tendring/Colchester border. They looked to deliver up to 43,000 new homes along the North Essex A120 corridor, with significant employment opportunities and transformational new infrastructure.
Following an examination in public, on 15 May 2020 the councils received the Planning Inspector’s letter concluding that the Braintree/Colchester borders Garden Community and the West of Braintree Garden Community were not viable and, therefore, not deliverable. The Inspector did agree, however, that the Tendring/Colchester borders Garden Community was viable and deliverable.
NEGC Ltd ceased trading on 31 August 2020.
